#MERS #Coronavirus: Unlike SARS

Translation/Excerpt:

In the journal Lancet, the attending physicians now report on the case and the peculiarities of the novel viral infection.

Their conclusion: The new, used mainly in the Middle East Corona virus seems to spread mainly via the respiratory tract. In contrast to the SARS virus, which is also one of the coronaviruses and the in which ten years ago about 800 people died, are found in the stool of patients, only a few viruses, the authors report by virologist Christian bailiff of the University Hospital Bonn.

Pathogens in urine and stool

As the medical report was the viral load in the lower respiratory tract is the greatest. This confirms the WHO recommendation to remove virus samples from this area in patients. Small quantities of pathogens found in urine and feces, the physicians of the patients, but not in the blood. The pathogens in the urine may indicate that the virus can multiply in the kidneys, they suggest. This could explain why the man - as well as some other patients - suffered kidney failure.
The low amounts of virus in the stool, however differ significantly from the Sars virus. This finding is important for practice, because so far are oriented physicians in the treatment and the course of SARS. The high bacterial burden in the lower respiratory tract suggests, the researcher suggests that the virus is excreted primarily via the respiratory tract. Such laboratory data are very important to assess prognosis and risk of infection better, they emphasize.
Add a comment Benoit Guery and Sylvie van der Werf write from Hopital Huriez in Lille (France) that the Mers-Cov-outbreak - measured by the course of SARS ten years ago - still could be in the early stages. Therefore, the international research community must urgently find effective therapies and evaluate.
