Hilary returned to spend Mother’s Day weekend with her mom, but wasn’t feeling well.

“She said she was just a little nauseated,” her mom recalled.

Hilary went back to Bowling Green Monday. Still not feeling well Tuesday, she went to the college health center and was told she had the flu.

Mankin’s phone calls to her daughter went unanswered Wednesday. That night, her roommates found Hilary dead in her bed and called 911.

“She wasn’t breathing, and she was unresponsive. They could see that she was dead,” her mother said.

Hilary was a 2010 graduate of Vermilion High School, and played on the school soccer team. That’s when it was discovered that Hilary had a bad heart valve. Now, Mankin wonders if that had something to do with her daughter’s death.

“She was weak already from being sick. Her heart was weak. Got this virus and it hit her.”

An autopsy was inconclusive for a cause of death.

Toxicology results are not expected for another 6 to 8 weeks.
