Iowa Public Health: Whooping cough in ‘outbreak’ stage for Fayette County

WEST UNION - With 55 confirmed cases of pertussis, or whooping cough as it is more commonly known, in Fayette County since May 17, Fayette County Public Health considers the County to be at “outbreak” or “epidemic” stage.
Fayette County Public Health reports that they and local healthcare providers are currently working with affected individuals and close contacts and that local healthcare providers are aware of the situations.

Public Health Marketing Director Jamie Hoey also confirmed that it is affecting the Oelwein area.

“Pertussis, is beginning to cause attention in the Oelwein area due to positive cases,” she said, confirming that at least six cases have been confirmed in the southern part of the county.

She said the number of confirmed cases, which are determined by laboratory tests, don’t include the symptomatic cases which is a much higher number.
