ITAHARI: The Sunsari-based Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and the vicinity are now at high risk of bird flu.
According to Dr Bolraj Acharya, chief at the Biratnagar-based Regional Livestock Directorate, the reserve, which is home to around 500 species of birds is under threat of avian flu. He informed that the livestock office is on high alert. Acharya said cooperation between local residents and officials is imperative to prevent the transmission of the virus into humans.
Locals fear that bird flu will spread in the reserve and nearby human settlements from neighbouring Prakashpur VDC. They have called on authorities to step up vigilance to prevent the spread of the virus.
