Updated January 12, 2011 11:17:19

South Korea increased warnings regarding bird flu in response to the rapid spread of the disease in that country.

Ministry of Agriculture said the warning had been raised to the second highest level since the bird flu strain that has spread to four provinces since the outbreak was first confirmed on 31 December.

Reported to have confirmed 16 cases in birds this winter.

With this new level of warning, all poultry within a radius of 3 kilometers from where an outbreak of disease will be destroyed, up from a radius of 500 meters earlier.
