The nation has confirmed a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) case for the first time in South Chungcheong Province, showing a nationalwide spread of the highly contagious disease.

The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service on Sunday said that two milk cows at a farm in the central city of Cheonan, 92 kilometers south of Seoul, have tested positive for FMD.

All 50 animals at the dairy farm have been ordered culled and buried to prevent the spread of FMD. About 210 cattle at two nearby farms within a 500 meter radius of the outbreak will also be culled as a precautionary measure.

The service plans to vaccinate all livestock within a ten kilometer radius of the outbreak.
The disease has been confirmed at 35 cities and counties nationwide.
