Indonesia Commentary

This is a Commentary of the activities in S. Sulawesi, from September 25th to October 3.

Back on September 25th, we first heard of a poultry outbreak:

" Attack avian influenza (AI) or bird flu spreads fast. Once found cases of sudden deaths of hundreds of chickens in Pinrang, Soppeng and Wajo, now the deadly disease from spreading to Bumi Nene Mallomo, Sidrap."

Wajo is very interesting, and we will come back to that in a minute. Here is a map of the location of Wajo:

It appears that it began with a breeder:

9/28:
"After the attack of thousands of birds belonging to a breeder in Kadidi, Labakkareng, Sidrap, virus Edy Basri-Suardi-Moch Dervish Only version of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (Disnakkan) Sidrap mentions, deaths of poultry in the region just as much as three tails only."
"Through the Department of Livestock and Fisheries (Disnakkan) Sidrap, Ju'mat (24 / 9), launch, about 1,000 laying chickens in the village of La Bakkareng Kadidi, District Five Chert, Sidrap, reportedly died suddenly."

Sidrap is located approximately here:

On Sept. 27th, it was revealed that 4,000 poultry were destroyed in North Luwu.
"Department of Agriculture North Luwu 4000 finally destroy the flu infected poultry in the village brung Patila, District Bonebone. 4000 cattle culling laying hens was conducted on Saturday, September 25, around 21:00 pm, at Village Patila."
That is located here:

The Village of Patile was quarantined, the that is what the red postmark above depicts:

In addition, Herrera said, the institute has also conducted isolasoi in place that found the virus in question. "Public Health has also made the isolation of the place (Village Patila, ed)," he said. Ten houses around the chicken pen found with the virus closely watched by the Department of Health and the local Animal Husbandry Department.

It appears that officers from Wajo, participated in the culling:

Culling of poultry infected with bird flu is led directly Head Clinic, drh Adriyani Ismail, and accompanied by officers from Wajo LDCC... In addition, he explained Wajo LDCC also assisted officers, led by drh Putu who come directly to the Village Patila.

On Sept. 29th, we had an update. No one suspected of bird flu, Tamiflu has been supplied.

We've been conducting searches in the surrounding area affected by bird flu, and has not been found infected in humans...In addition, District Health Office. North Luwu provide anti-viral drugs to the community around it, and also provides post a complaint if there are people affected by symptoms of fever with flu.

Meanwhile, A KLB was declared for Pinrang on Sept. 27th, and the number of victims being watched and observed went from 8 to 28 to 30. 3 have been hospitalized.

Polewali is important, and we'll come back to that shortly. Map of Polewali:

Sept. 30th: 33 Supervised [http://pandemicinformationnews.blogspot.com/2010/09/indonesia-suspected-h5n1-patients.html]

As this is going on, we hear of a confirmed H5N1 Poultry Outbreak in Balikpapen.
Sept. 29th:
About 30 chickens in RT 4 and 5 Manggar Village, East Aberdeen destroyed, after the discovery of a number of chickens died suddenly. Department of Agriculture, Marine, and Fisheries (DPKP) indicates, the chicken was suspected avian influenza or bird flu.

Today, Oct. 3rd, we hear that they are indeed confirmed, and also spreading:
Already there are two areas of positive bird flu that is in the area of the East Village and Village Manggar Balikpapan Balikpapan Gunung Bahagia South. Village of Mount Joy To many people who die of chicken in RT 59 and RT 60, allegedly a few chickens in the region contracted the bird flu virus, residents advised not to approach chickens that have died or are infected with bird flu can be contagious because it is dangerous.

Embedded in the article, is a declaration, that I've not yet seen admitted before....

"Immediately report to the RT and RT respectively submit it to us for follow up, so that transmission is not so broad," he said. The disease itself can be transmitted to humans and from human to human, panyakit bird flu is dangerous disease and can cause death.

The reason Balikpapan is important, is because of it's proximity to our outbreak:

In between our outbreak, and Balikpapan, is a tiny Island called Badi. It's population is about 400. Yesterday, we received one report. It stated that 200 people have fever. 3 have died. There is no healthcare. Speculation their, is of birdflu, but it cannot be proved, because of the lack of doctors. People are suffering.

About 200 residents on the island of Badi, Mattirodeceng Village, District Liukang Tupabbiring, Pangkep, must bear the pain because there are no health workers who serve them.

Mattirodeceng mayor, Abdullah Asagaf, very mengkwatirkan fate of all citizens on the island of Badi, amounting to some 400 heads of families that every day someone is sick. Until now carrying about 200 people sick fever due to bad weather that hit the island.

"In fact there were three people there died of fever. Some call for bird flu, but residents and local governments can not justify or confirm allegations that because only the health personnel who can determine whether bird flu is," said Ahmad Effendi, the people of Makassar, who happened to be there a few days ago.

Location of Badi Island:

Right on time, I have noticed a couple articles this morning, on this subject:

The government will hold a meeting with all the provinces in order to strengthen the commitment of achieving the Millennium Development Goals as well as synergizing health policy and local government.

There are nine provinces to immediately improve the health condition of society, namely Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, Gorontalo, Papua, West Papua, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara
.

Remember Wajo? I talked about it at the beginning of the Commentary. Here is a map, of Wajo and it's proximity to Badi Island.
