Spread of FMD in southern Japan

According to official data, have detected signs of the disease in at least 126 farms of cattle and pigs in Miyazaki, where more than 114,000 animals have been culled.

EFE .- Japan's Miyazaki province (southern Sweden) said today in an emergency situation by the unstoppable spread of an outbreak of FMD among cattle in the area, Kyodo news agency reported today.
We are in a situation that is impossible to stop the spread, "said the governor of Miyazaki, Hideo Higashikokubaru, before warning that the risk of infection spreading to the rest of the country" is undeniable. "
According to official data, have detected signs of the disease in at least 126 farms of cattle and pigs in Miyazaki, where more than 114,000 animals have been culled.
Furthermore, the Government admitted today Japan's mistakes in tackling the outbreak, after news that local authorities ignored the infection during the inspection of a farm at the end of March.
Niponas Veterinary authorities in early April confirmed an outbreak of type O virus of foot and mouth disease, currently the most common in Asia, where the disease is endemic.
Officials who conducted the inspection, however, have been charged too slowly when carrying out tests in animals with symptoms of the disease, which would have facilitated the spread of the virus.
"If they had taken action in March, the infection may not have spread this far," he said Yoshitaka Goto, professor at the University of Miyazaki.
The Koizumi, Yukio Hatoyama, admitted today that they have been able to produce "some problems" but said the government would "work together to prevent further spread of infection."
FMD is a highly contagious disease of cloven-hoofed animals like cows, sheep, goats and pigs.
It causes high fever and characteristic lesions in the mouth and feet of animals and does not affect humans.
