Avian influenza H5N1 detected in Romania, the first case in the EU in one year

A poultry farm in Romania has been infected by avian influenza H5N1, the first recorded case in the EU in one year, said Tuesday the European Commission.

The affected farm is located in the town of Letea, near the Ukrainian border.
Preventive measures were taken immediately, as the slaughter of poultry and the establishment of a protection zone with a radius of 3 km around the farm, and a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 km considered "high risk".
The last confirmed case of bird flu had been detected in a wild duck in Germany in March 2009.
