Nasik, Aug 12 (IBNS) Swine flu has now claimed 15 lives in India. A doctor in Nasik, a 41-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman in Pune succumbed to swine flu on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old doctor Rupesh Gangurde died of the viral infection at the Nashik civil hospital this morning, hospital sources said.
He was admitted to a private hospital on Monday after he complained of vomitting and fever, they said. His blood samples were sent to Pune for testing after which the report tested positive for H1N1.
Gangurde was brought last night to the Nashik civil hospital where he died at 0230 hours, they said.
In Pune, the worst hit city in Maharashtra, 41-year-old Balu Kulund died after being admitted into Sasoon hospital.
Also, Shrawani Deshpande died at 2.30 AM on Wednesday morning following severe lung infection caused by the virus, attending doctors said.
She was brought to the hospital in a serious condition with pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
On Tuesday, five people died of H1N1, the highest in a single day so far. All of them had complications and developed acute respiratory distress syndrome
In what could throw the medicos in a tizzy is a report in a leading US newspaper, which says swine flu may not always be accompanied by fever.
In fact, in a significant number of documented cases, no temperature has been recorded even after some patients deteriorated.
So absence of fever can lead to wrong diagnosis, and underestimation of total number of confirmed cases.
Also, screening at airports will have limitations, as a flu carrier without fever will go undetected through thermal scanners.
As the Centre and the states intensified their battle against the infection, central teams have been despatched to all states and Union Territories after Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad chaired a meeting of 35 additional secretaries and joint secretaries drawn from various ministries who would fan out across the country.
He briefed the teams personally yesterday before they were dispatched to the state capitals.
