WHO outbreak alert in Mexicali

Friday, April 24, 2009

GENEVA (Reuters) - Mexico reported a possible third outbreak of swine influenza in this case in Mexicali near the U.S. border, with four suspected cases but no deaths so far, said on Friday the World Health Organization (WHO) .

WHO said the virus in outbreaks in Mexico and United States had not previously been detected in pigs or humans, but it has been proven that they are sensitive to the drug Tamiflu.

Known generically as oseltamivir, the pill of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche Holding can both fight and prevent influenza infections.

"Because there are human cases associated with an animal influenza virus due to the geographical spread of outbreaks in many communities, in addition to the unusual age of the groups concerned, these events generate a high concern," said the agency based in Geneva in a statement.

The United Nations (UN) issued a brochure that people know more about this virus.
